Wood chipper processing sawmill residuals into biomass fuel

Biomass Production

Hugh MacInnis Lumber produces wood biomass from residual fibre generated during our harvesting and milling operations. By converting tops, branches, and low-grade wood into biomass fuel, we make sustainable use of the full forest harvest — reducing waste and supporting Cape Breton's growing demand for renewable energy feedstock.

From Waste to Energy

In a typical harvest, a significant portion of the tree — tops, limbs, and crooked or defective stems — has limited value as lumber or firewood. We chip and process it into biomass fuel suitable for industrial and institutional heating systems. It's a practical way to extract value from every part of the harvest and reduce our reliance on non renewable energy sources.

Sustainable Forest Management

Biomass production fits naturally into our approach to forest management. Removing harvest residuals improves site conditions for replanting and natural regeneration and reduces fire risk. Combined with our commitment to responsible harvesting practices, biomass production helps us operate as a truly full-utilization forestry company.

Supply & Delivery

We are proud to have been selected by Nova Scotia Health as a supplier of biomass for heating local hospitals.
